Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?

Capture FREEDOMFear entraps us if we let it, it is by far the greatest keeper of the vulnerable. Many years ago I read a book entitled, Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. The book highlighted to me that fear is present whether we want it or not and the issue isn’t the fear itself but how we respond to it.

Fear often results in depression, anxiety and a lot of pain. Our conditioned, self-imposing limitations project us onto the road of self-destruction and so we can often find ourselves caught in a web like a helpless insect waiting for its predator. So how do we free ourselves from our own restrictions?

It’s recognising the influence that the inner-voice has over us. Not the nice, soft, loving, kind, be-gentle-to-yourself voice that is in there but seldom surfaces, but the negative, destructive ego that lives within all of us. Professor Steve Peters refers to it as our Inner Chimp (The Chimp Paradox) and like Susan Jeffers, offers self-help techniques to regain control of your own thoughts.

Abolishing self-doubt and inner negativity is key in my opinion to being able to move confidently forward in your life. To not only make plans and set goals but to be capable of taking risks to ensure that all you hope for comes to fruition. Life is an experience and many of us fail to reach our full potential because of this constricting fear we hold within.

There are still moments of self-doubt in my world but these days they are short lived. It’s easier for me to recognise and then manage the emotions my inner chimp is insistent on brandishing. Notice how I say easier and not easy, self-doubt is always a challenge.

I came across a quote the other day that to me sums up the word fear. Knowing we live in a dualistic universe it is the perfect quote. So much so, I’ve printed it out and have it hanging up in my dining room for all to see. It serves as a reminder to me that whether I like it or not, fear will always rear its ugly head to try and put me down but I have a choice as to how I respond. The quote is:

          F-E-A-R has two meanings:

          Forget Everything And Run

       Face Everything And Rise

The Choice is Yours!

Fabulous isn’t it?! if you get the opportunity to read either Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway or The Chimp Paradox, I would highly recommend it to enable you to seize the fear within and show it who’s the boss of your life!

I Think You Are Gorgeous

I used to struggle with receiving compliments. I found it difficult to give them out to others but if I was on the receiving end….whoa! Totally different story. I would dismiss them and have even been known to counteract them with putting myself down, a lot. I am not alone; I know many people who… Continue Reading
